Enabling more disabled, ethnic minority and young people to make full use of the countryside and enjoy the benefits

The Brief

DEFRA’s Diversity Strategy aimed to diversify access to the countryside.

We carried out an exhaustive literature review and primary research with some 300 ethnic minority, disabled and young people and diversity experts to explore, in each under-represented group:

  • representations of the countryside
  • barriers to access
  • experiences of the countryside
  • perceived benefits

We also shared evidence and good practice with countryside professionals at road shows up and down the country.

The challenges they faced

  • Working with some 300 stakeholders
  • Escorting ethnic minority, young and disabled people on visits to the countryside
  • Generating robust evidence to drive government strategy and policy
  • Galvanising countryside practitioners around diversity and inclusion
